Gabriele (daughter of cousin Wilma)

Karl & Family, those two words cannot be separated. Family was so important for you – and you included us here in Austria as well. One of my most cherished childhood memories is Christmas – especially as all of my grandma (your aunt) Emmi’s family was gathered round the phone in the evening – making calls to Canada.

I remember (although I was quite young) when you came over with your family including your dad and mum to see (and show your family), where your father came from.  I cherish the memories of our trip to Canada, where all the family was so patient in trying to teach us in baseball, where you took us on a boat, and I was so impressed by your presence and calm.

Over the years it seemed that you and I should be the links to keep the connection between Canada and Austria, sharing memories and photos via e-mail. We all cherished that Bev & you would always try to sneak in periods in Vienna when going on Danube cruises or other visits to Europe. You made Emmi so happy – although she could not understand you and needed us to translate for her. You were so kind and even tried to talk in German. I still smile when I think of you and your cousin Wilma communicating: she talking in German (as she was afraid you would not understand her English) – you answering in English: but the conversations were perfect the way they were.

I am so grateful and remember so well your last visit to Vienna – where you even got to know my little daughter Dana. She was impressed and shy first – but you even got her to showing what she already knows to say in English and she still has your wonderful gifts to her and loves to play with that purse.

You will never be forgotten – thanks for the wonderful times we had together.
